Transgender prisoner Tara Hudson describes life in all-male prison as "hell"

A transgender woman who was sent to an all-male prison in Bristol has described life there as 'hell'.

Tara Hudson, who has lived her adult life as a woman, was sent to the all-male HMP Bristol after she admitted assault.

In an interview with ITV West Country she criticised the government and prison services for allowing her to be put in a situation where she did not feel safe.

Tara Hudson said she had suffered sexual harassment in prison. She felt the male prisoners had been very forward with her, even asking her to flash her bust, to the point that she didn't feel safe.

She also argued her situation had been handled in a very confused manner with prison staff not sure of how to treat her.

She also described her pain at hearing that two other transgender prisoners in the UK had been sent to all-male prisons and had committed suicide in custody. She said at one point she considered taking her own life.

Shauna Hoare, the woman convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 17 years in prison after the death of Becky Watts, ended up at the same prison and although the pair briefly struck up a friendship Tara Hudson said she believed Hoare was "evil from the first time I saw her".

More than 150,000 people signed a petition for Tara Hudson to be moved from HPM Bristol and she was then transferred to the women's prison Eastwood Park in Gloucestershire.

She was released on Friday.
