Fifty years after it was first proposed, a bypass around the village of Kingskerswell is nearing completion. It has taken three years and will have cost more than £110 million.

It will take 30,000 cars every day away from homes in the village and reduce congestion on one of the busiest stretches of road in Devon.

Contractors are racing to finish the project before the end of the year. A fleet of lorries has been drafted in to lay the asphalt - one of the last jobs of any road construction scheme.

Ground work teams are also racing to tidy the verges. Soon grass and plants will cover the mud. Sunil Deware has been working on the road since construction started. He's looking forward to the end result.

Much of the route is a dual carriageway, which it's hoped will significantly shorten journey times on the main route in and out of Torbay. It is officially called the South Devon Highway.

It is estimated that 8,000 new jobs will be created in and around Torbay once the new road is open - improved traffic flow will encouraging business confidence and investment.

The project manager says the construction should be finished in December with the hope that 50 years of queues through Kingskerswell will soon become a distant memory.
