Becky Watts trial: Shauna Hoare - a profile

Hoare presented a stark difference to her boyfriend of seven years. She was sweet, often giggly and acted, according to the prosecution, “as if butter wouldn’t melt”. Rarely losing her temper, Hoare answered questions with precision and showed little, if any emotion.

She coldly denied any part in Becky’s murder, but she too was guilty from the start.

The court heard Hoare lived with a number of foster parents as she grew up, but, aged 13, went back to live with her mother Lisa Donovan. Meeting Matthews aged 15, the pair quickly became inseparable and he moved in with her, first into her family home, then into a garage annex off the main house. In 2012 they moved to Cotton Mill Lane together.

But Hoare told the court their relationship was far from idyllic - accusing him of controlling most aspects of her life - including what she ate and drank, whether, and when, she smoked, where she went, and how she did her hair.

She also said Matthews have been violent towards her on a number of occasions, claiming he strangled her, and dragged her by her hair.

When told of what her boyfriend did by police Hoare claimed she “felt sick”, as well as “disgusted and outrageously angry”. But her thoughts and feelings fell on deaf ears, and a jury convicted her regardless.

The 21-year-old also did not hide how she felt towards Becky, telling police she believed the teen was often “attention seeking” and knew how to “work people” to get what she wanted.
