The stepbrother of teenager Becky Watts tearfully confessed to police his plan to kidnap her to make her "more appreciative of life".

28-year-old Nathan Matthews was arrested initially for the kidnap of his step-sister before police found his bloody fingerprints on her bedroom door frame. He was later rearrested for her murder.

After being confronted with evidence of blood found in his home, Matthews penned a confession to killing the teen.

In the video, Matthews is shown accusing Watts of treating his mother, Watts' stepmother, "like dirt" - adding that he planned the kidnap to "scare her".

But, the court heard, when that was read to officers, he sat with his fingers in his ears, refusing to listen to his statement.

In a third interview, on March 3, after begging police not to mention his girlfriend Shauna Hoare, he was pushed by police for more details.

The 11-minute long interview shows Matthews crying, wringing his hands and wiping his face with his t-shirt. "I came up with the idea to scare her", he tells detectives, "so she'd be more appreciative for other people, grateful". He tells them he'd wanted to "say something along the lines of 'you've got to start treating people better, not being a bitch or self-centred' ".

Matthews, who was wearing a dark t-shirt, stared at the floor throughout the confession, speaking to the ground, in the video shown in court. In the dock he kept his head bowed.
