Drivers face the prospect of a 20mph limit becoming standard on inner-city roads as part of a blitz on dangerous driving.

New research shows that the majority of councils in England have lowered or are considering lowering the speed limit in residential areas.

Plymouth City Council are currently in the process of considering the 20mph speed limit in a bid to crackdown on road safety.

The report, issued by anti-speeding charity Brake, said that out of 122 responses from all 206 local traffic authorities, 21% said they had introduced or were planning to introduce a widespread limit of 20mph.

A further 36% had carried out limited trials.
