Asda, Aldi and Morrisons agree to pay farmers more for milk
Supermarkets Asda, Aldi and Morrisons have all agreed to pay farmers more for milk.
The decisions follow a series of protests in supermarkets across our region, as well as talks with farming unions.
Farmers say they are currently paid less than the milk costs to produce, and that the industry is struggling desperately.
Aldi will pay farmers 28p per litre from Monday, while Morrisons will pay 26p - as well as creating its own premium milk and cheese lines for an extra 10p per litre, with the extra going back to the farmers. Asda has also agreed to increase the price it pays.
The National Farmers Union has welcomed the moves, and says there is more work to be done.
Major supermarket chains Tesco and Sainsburys have so far ruled out making similar moves, saying they already pay a fair price based on the cost of production.
