Huge jellyfish surge around the West Country's shore - but many are dying in spring storms

Jellyfish the size of a dustbins are being seen in large numbers around the West Country's shoreline. Scientists think a lack of predators and warm winters are allowing them to thrive.

For wildlife photographer Steve Trewhella, swimming with these curious creatures is a mesmerising experience.

However, this is how most of us will experience the jellyfish: many are washing up dead on our beaches following recent storms.

Sadly, there is nothing to be done for a beached jellyfish. They will dry out and die, melting into the sand. But it still provides a valuable opportunity to look at them close up.

Scientists say for the last couple of years larger swarms have been seen around the region than in previous years. They say there is a trend towards them being seen earlier in the year too.
