Police are appealing for witnesses after a man broke into a house and tied up a woman and a child.

The man, who wore a balaclava-type mask over his face, broke in through a unsecured door at around 7.50am.

He proceeded to tie up his victims and threaten them with a knife. A sexual assault also took place.

The events occurred between 7.50am and 8.15am on Wednesday 21 January, in the Dunwear Lane area of Sydenham.

Police say they have already pinpointed the offenders movements after the events and found the weapon used.

They are urging anyone with further information to come forward.
