Safe from the Severn... so far

Troops, council and environmental agency workers battled to keep flood waters out of a Gloucester community last night.

It was feared that the River Severn would overwhelm flood defences at Alney Island.

The Environment Agency issued a severe flood warning, which means a risk to life but at high water the defences held firm.

Sandbags have been piled high to protect people's homes from the threat of serious flooding.

The Environment Agency says that they are not out of the woods yet though. High tide is expected at 10 am this morning, and it's feared the River Severn will overtop all the residents' carefully laid defences.

Troops worked into the night to try to make sure the water didn't invade people's homes.
