One of the world's most famous brands has chosen Exeter for its first store in the region. Swedish furniture firm IKEA is expected to be given approval on Monday for what will be the second largest retail outlet in Devon.

Exeter's business leaders say it further cements the city's position as the main shopping centre west of Bristol.

IKEA is a destination store to which thousands of people from the region head to each year up the M5 to Bristol. On Monday, though, Exeter city council is expected to approve plans for the Swedish flatpack furniture retailer to build here.

The site is off junction 30 of the motorway close to the Exeter Chiefs Sandy Park rugby ground and with IKEA expecting 400,000 shoppers each year Exeter's challenge is to get many of those into the city centre.

Although planning permission is expected to be given on Monday the firm has no timetable in place for when work will begin.
