Memorial for South West road victims

A ceremony was held in Bath today to remember those who lost their lives in road accidents.

Around two thousand people are killed on Britain's roads every year. Today's event was an opportunity for bereaved families from the South West to come together for the World Day of Remembrance, which was started by the charity Road Peace in 1993. It's a day for family and friends to come together and remember those who died.

Clare Hudson lost her son in a motorbike accident 15 years ago. She says: "It really was devastating and your life just changes. Losing a child is quite different from losing another member of your family because you're having to do things for them that really I'd rather he'd be doing for me."

Every day around five people are killed on Britain's roads. Today's event is about raising awareness of the dangers.

The event finished at the Road Peace memorial in Bath which serves as a permanent reminder of the impact of road crashes in the South West.

Flowers were laid for each of the 63 victims who died in the Avon and Somerset area this year alone.

Like the roadside memorials of flowers at the sites of car accidents it's a poignant reminder of how devastating road deaths can be.
