Man charged over bridge death
There's a makeshift shrine beneath St Phillips Bridge in Bristol where a 22 year old tragically lost her life in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The girl, named locally as Namara Whisker, was a passenger in a car which at around 4 am came off the road and through the railings on the bridge, landing in the water below.
There were four others in the silver BMW at the time - they were all rescued by police who dived into the River Avon to save them. Six officers from Avon and Somerset Police were taken to hospital after leaping into the water but they have all now returned to work.
A steady stream of Namara's friends have laid flowers at the scene, with one describing her as "a beautiful angel who will never be forgotten."
Other friends took to social networking sites to pay tribute. One wrote on Twitter "So sad to hear bad news of such a wonderful person taken away from us far too young. RIP Namara, thinking of you, your family & your baby."
Another added "Rip Namara. I cannot believe it.. That's 2 people in 20 hours I know just gone...... Lifes toooo precious! "
The former business studies student from the Easton area of the city was a young mum with a three month old son.
Two other passengers in the car had to be taken to hospital.
Engineers were today working to erect a temporary barrier to cover up the gaping hole in the railings over the bridge where the car plunged 20 feet into the river below.
Shennie Jaffar from Bristol has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, drink-driving and driving without insurance or a licence.
The 33 year old is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates Court tomorrow.
A 21 year old woman from Bristol who was also being held has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
