Wind grounds ballons at Fiesta

Thousands of vistors headed to the West Country today for the biggest hot air balloon show in Europe. But while the sun shone for much of the day, heavy winds meant many balloons were grounded.

In fact this morning's mass ascent - normally involving up to a hundred balloons - included just seventeen. And the Parachute acrobatics team decided to stay on terra firma until the wind died down.

There was still lots to do. Model aircraft displays zoomed overhead. Even the Great Western Air Ambulance flew in.

This afternoon, a real crowd pleaser made an appearance - a Spitfire Memorial flight.

Back on the ground, live music, marching bands, food stalls and fairground rides kept many entertained.

Despite the wind today, the weather up until now has been perfect. More than 200 thousand people watched the mass ascent last night. And for the first time at the Fiesta crowds were treated to a display by the Illuminair team.

Tonight, organisers are still hoping for a successful nightglow. But whatever the weather, they say it's a good night out anyway.
