Multi-faith rally held to raise the profile of diversity in Bristol
More than two hundred people took part in a rally today hoping to raise the profile of diversity in Bristol. It comes 24 hours after the English Defence League marched through the city.
The All Together Peace Walk was organised by the Bristol Multi-Faith Forum. It's aim was to present a picture of unity among different faiths and was organised in a direct response to yesterday's march through the city centre by the EDL.
The EDL claim they were marching to highlight the "Islamification" of Bristol, but opposition groups accuse them of exaggerating racial divisions and inciting racism.
The Peace Walk route went across Pero's bridge, named after a slave who arrived in the city probably from the Caribbean in the late eighteenth century. The organisers were keen to show that if slavery can be outlawed and become unacceptable, anything can.
The Bristol Multi- faith forum are hoping this rally will start a debate about issues of community cohesion and help improve communication between different religious groups.
