Repatriation for Warminster soldier killed in Afghanistan
The repatriation of Warminster-based soldier Private Gregg Stone, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 3rd has taken place today(Thurs).
The 20 year old served with 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment and was based at Battlesbury Barracks in Warminster, Wiltshire.
Pte Stone who had been in the country less than a month was killed during a mission to rescue policeman Abdul Walid from insurgents in the south of Nahr-e Saraj district.
His wife Samantha described him as her "soul-mate" and a "brilliant husband and a man who loved his family." His death takes the number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 to 416.
Pte Stone will be repatriated along with 27 year old Corporal Michael Thacker from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, who was killed on Friday 1st June. The plane carrying both soldiers is due at RAF Brize Norton around 1pm, before the cortege makes the journey past the memorial garden on the edge of Carterton.
