A303 summit in Westminster

Disruptions on the A303 cause many traffic delays

The A303 is one of our regions busiest roads, connecting the South West Peninsula to the capital. It's a key route for business and commuters. But with a mix of single and dual carriageway there is often heavy traffic and long delays.

There have been many failed attempts to improve it over the years. Today a group from Somerset County Council went to Westminster hoping for more success.

But millions of pounds and years of enquiries hasn't worked so far. In the past, there were plans to upgrade the A303 around Illminster, make the connecting A358 a dual carriage way and build another, cutting through the picturesque Black Down Hills towards Exeter.

All were scrapped- either too expensive, or too controversial. This time round there aren't concrete proposals, just a general aim- to turn more sections of the route into dual carriage ways. The hope is it will reduce accidents, appease motorists and boost business.

They won't be racing ahead anytime soon though, first they need they money to do it.
