Hampshire Chief Constable Andy Marsh has been announced as the preferred candidate by Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens, who described him as a "highly experienced" officer with experience in the South West.
Chief Constable Marsh was assessed against four other candidates over two days.
His appointment still has to be confirmed by the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Panel, which will meet to discuss it on Monday 14th December, at Weston-super-Mare Town Hall.
