'Every day has been a living nightmare' - powerful statement by Becky Watts' mother read to court
The mother of murdered teenager Becky Watts reduced many in court to tears with a powerful victim impact statement, in which she describes how the manner of her daughter's death continues to haunt her.
The statement, read out by the family liason officer, continued: "Every day has been a living nightmare. And for some reason that I will never understand, after my daughter was murdered, she was mutilated."
"She was my child, she was only 16."
The court heard how Tanya Watts was worried about seeing Becky's body after her death, knowing that her daughter had been dismembered. She said it was a private, personal visit, which she didn't want to share, but told the court that "The image of Becky there with a bandage around her little wrist...that image haunts me."
The statement thanked all those who donated to Becky's funeral, which Tanya Watts described as a "beautiful send off".
Tanya Watts said she has been unable to accept what happened: "Becky's death has left a massive hole even in just ordinary everyday things. I still have the chicken in the freezer I was going to do for their Sunday roast. I still have her pocket money in an envelope."
"Becky must have been so scared, thinkig she was resting in her bedroom, before being attacked by someone she thought of as her family."
The judge will sentence Nathan Matthews, who was found guilty of murdering the teenager, and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare, who was found guilty of manslaughter.
