Wales marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme

Services have been held across Wales to mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme began.

Today a national service of remembrance was held on the Somme frontline in honour of the 4,000 Welsh soldiers who died or were injured at the Battle of Mametz Wood during the First World War.

Tributes to fallen Welsh soldiers at Mametz Wood

Wales' first Minister has paid tribute to fallen Welsh soldiers at a remembrance service in France.

Four thousand Welsh soldiers died or were injured at the Battle of Mametz Wood during the First World War.

Carwyn Jones said: "Today we honour them for their bravery and their courage".

Representatives from Wales' political parties also laid wreaths at the foot of the Mametz Wood memorial.
