‘Gypsy boy’ comment should be put to bed says RFU chief

England say Joe Marler did apologise to Samson Lee at half-time. Credit: PA Images

Rugby Football Union chief Ian Ritchie is satisfied Joe Marler's 'gypsy boy' comment to Samson Lee has been dealt with in the right way.

Marler was not sanctioned after verbally abusing the Wales prop in England's 25-21 win over Wales at Twickenham earlier this month.

The Six Nations committee accepted his private and public apology as sufficient and chose not to impose any punishment.

World Rugby has since launched inquiries into the process of his investigation and could enforce sanctions on the 25-year-old.

Let's take some perspective and let's not deflect from what we did in terms of the Grand Slam. There was no citing officer complaint, there was no referee complaint, and the Six Nations looked at the matter fully as well, and came to a conclusion. So as far as I'm concerned that should be the end of the matter.

– Ian Ritchie, England Rugby Football Union Chief
