50th anniversary since closure of Capel Celyn School

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the closure of a school in north Wales before the valley it was in was controversially flooded for a reservoir.

The area is now a reservoir supplying water to England.

Capel Celyn School near Bala was closed in 1965, along with farms, a chapel a post office, a cemetery and 12 houses.

Families who had relatives buried in the cemetery were given the option of either moving them to another cemetery, or leaving them.

The community was moved on to create the Llyn Celyn, otherwise known as the Tryweryn reservoir and supply water to Liverpool and the surrounding area.

The event resulted in a series of protests at the time.
