Beijing gold medalist Simon Richardson had the honour of lighting the cauldron in Cardiff this morning.
He had been hoping to compete in the Games, but his London 2012 ambitions were shattered after being hit by a car last year.
"Lighting it in Cardiff - the capital city of my country - and actually getting picked to do it" was a proud moment", he told David Wood.
"It was such a shock to get the phone call to say I'd been chosen".
"It's good to be involved. It's not the part I wanted to do, obviously, but it's still part of the Games!"
