Fire safety in high rise tower blocks will be considered later in a one-day National Assembly inquiry in response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London.

The Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee will examine the safety requirements, guidance to residents and the current regulations in Wales.

We all watched in horror last week as the terrible events in Grenfell Tower unfolded, and I want to get reassurances that all necessary safeguards are in place to prevent such a tragedy in Wales.

We hope to hear from those responsible in local government, housing associations, and fire and rescue services in Wales. We will then follow up any issues with the Welsh Government.

We want to ask the questions that people living in tower blocks in Wales are asking, and we will be inviting tenants groups to speak to us. We want to receive assurances that where residents have concerns, they are being listened to and addressed.

Rhyl High School will reopen on Monday 10 July after closing for two days due to concerns over cladding.

A decision was taken to close the school last Wednesday after it emerged the cladding used as part of the new building came from the same manufacturer that provided the cladding for Grenfell Tower.

In a joint statement, Denbighshire County Council and Rhyl High School said safety experts have carried out a rigorous investigation and found the building to be fully compliant, with no additional risk of fire.

They thanked pupils and parents for their patience, stressing that pupil safety is "paramount".

Further tests are to be undertaken urgently on cladding and insulation after all 190 samples from buildings failed combustibility tests rolled out after the Grenfell Tower fire.

Experts will look at how different varieties of cladding insulation with different types of a aluminium panels react in a fire, says the UK Government.

The large-scale tests will involve building a 30ft high demonstration wall with a complete cladding system and subjecting it to conditions which replicate "a severe fire".

The Government said the results will help landlords make decisions on any further actions they may need to take to ensure their buildings are safe.

Meanwhile the Welsh Government said that to date no aluminium composite material has been identified in any NHS Wales buildings.
