Clean-up operation begins in Aberystwyth after 'tornado' damage

Work will begin later today to clean up and repair damage to parts of Aberystwyth following severe weather yesterday.

The town experienced gusts of up to 95mph with heavy rain hitting the coast.

Houses were damaged, windows smashed and 20 caravans overturned when a 'tornado' like weather front hit.

The full extent of the damage is unknown.

The Met Office has also put eight flood alerts in place across Wales for today.

Mid and West Fire Service say they have attended a caravan park in Aberystwyth after reports 20 of them overturned during severe gales.

It comes following unconfirmed reports of a tornado in Clarach, Aberystwyth after winds reached over 80mph.

The fire service say they have left the scene now but are in attendance at a number of 'unsafe structures' in the area.

Mr Scarrott from Clarach Bay caravan park said they are still assessing the damage and are in the process of contacting the owners.

The wind went in a straight line.

Roads closed as strong winds and heavy rain cause damage across mid Wales

Fallen trees and debris have closed several roads in Aberystwyth and across mid Wales.

It comes following unconfirmed reports of a tornado in Clarach.

There is also a yellow warning in place for wind across South Wales.

The police also reported road closures due to fallen tiles from roofs.

There are unconfirmed reports a tornado has hit Aberystwyth after high winds caused damage in west Wales.

There is a yellow warning in place of wind for Monmouthshire, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly until 5pm tonight.
