‘Gypsy boy’ comment should be put to bed says RFU chief

Rugby Football Union chief Ian Ritchie is satisfied Joe Marler's 'gypsy boy' comment to Samson Lee has been dealt with in the right way.

Marler was not sanctioned after verbally abusing the Wales prop in England's 25-21 win over Wales at Twickenham earlier this month.

The Six Nations committee accepted his private and public apology as sufficient and chose not to impose any punishment.

World Rugby has since launched inquiries into the process of his investigation and could enforce sanctions on the 25-year-old.

Let's take some perspective and let's not deflect from what we did in terms of the Grand Slam. There was no citing officer complaint, there was no referee complaint, and the Six Nations looked at the matter fully as well, and came to a conclusion. So as far as I'm concerned that should be the end of the matter.

Biggar takes the positives from Six Nations

Dan Biggar believes that Wales are "in pretty good shape" at the conclusion of this season's RBS 6 Nations Championship.

While fly-half Biggar accepts that Wales' title hopes were undone by a first-half horror show against England at Twickenham, they can still reflect on a runners-up finish, while also scoring more points and tries than any other team.

It was 40 minutes against England this term, and it was the same last year, after which we went on to play some good rugby and should have won the championship, albeit we had that freak of a final day in 2015.

So other than 40 minutes of poor rugby against England at Twickenham, I think we are in pretty good shape.

Forty minutes of poor rugby in the first half has really hurt us, and that is something we have to address.

World Rugby has requested further information from Six Nations Rugby, after they decided not to sanction England prop Joe Marler.

Marler was heard using offensive language towards Wales prop Samson Lee during the clash last weekend.

Marler has been cleared to play in the upcoming Six Nations match against France by the tournament's disciplinary committee.

The Welsh Rugby Union objected publicly to the decision, a move which angered England coach Eddie Jones.

The WRU has issued a statement says it's 'surprised' over the Six Nations disciplinary committee's decision not to sanction Joe Marler over his 'Gypsy Boy' comment.

The committee met yesterday and concluded that Marler's comment to Wales prop Samson Lee had been made 'in the heat of the moment' and no action would be taken.

We are surprised by the decision of the Six Nations disciplinary hearing. We stand by our belief that that there is no place for the use of racist language in sport. Clearly this incident has raised broader issues for the game of rugby which require follow up and which we are undertaking directly with Six Nations. Our focus now is on preparing for the final weekend of the championship and giving the Welsh public the win they deserve.

– WRU statement

Warren Gatland apologised yesterday for any offence caused when he described the incident as 'banter' earlier this week.

England prop Marler escapes sanctions over 'gypsy boy' comment

Six Nations Rugby has announced that England's Joe Marler will not be sanctioned over his verbal abuse of Wales' Samson Lee.

They say they've considered the report in detail and noted that Marler deeply regretted what he said immediately and apologised at half time.

They've also accepted the explanation provided that the comment was one made in the heat of the moment.

I have been warned very clearly by Eddie Jones how comments like this are unacceptable. I will certainly conduct myself differently in future. I do not condone racism in any form, at any time, deeply regret the incident and intend to reflect the behaviours expected of an England player going forward. Once again I apologise for the upset my inappropriate remark has caused.

No action will be taken over England's Joe Marler striking Wales prop Rob Evans during last weekend's Six Nations game.

Marler appeared before a disciplinary committee in London today, which concluded that while it upheld the citing complaint, the act wouldn't have warranted a red card and so no sanction would be imposed.
