Roads close as fire crews tackle blaze in Cardiff building

Police and fire services are still at the scene of the fire in a disused building in Pearl Street, in the Splott area of Cardiff.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said the fire was reported at around 12.40pm.

Residents relocated while fire investigations continue

Residents living close to a disused building gutted by fire in Cardiff have been relocated while investigations into the blaze continue.

Fire crews were called to Pearl Street, Splott, at around 12.40pm on Monday and spent much of the day extinguishing the flames.

The roof of the building has collapsed and there remains a risk of the rest of the building collapsing. Until the area can be made safe restrictions will remain in place.

Surrounding properties were evacuated and residents have been relocated or are being supported at a local authority rest centre while the building's safety is assessed. Agate Street, Pearl Street and Splott Road are all closed. Police say it's still too early to say what caused the fire.

Pearl Street is closed in both directions because of an unsafe building between Splott Road and Clifton Street / Tin Street. Police directing are traffic. It's also affecting Splott Road in both directions between Pearl Street and Railway Street.

'Risk of building collapsing'

Firefighters say there's a risk that a fire-hit building in Cardiff could collapse.

Roads around the old Bingo hall in Pearl Street are still closed and an investigation continues.

The fire has been brought under control and is now contained within the building. The roof has collapsed and there is a risk of the building collapsing. The firefighting operation will continue tonight to minimise any risk to the public.

Some neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution, with people in the area advised to keep doors and windows shut and to remain indoors.

Firefighters are tackling a large building fire in Cardiff.

Crews from Cardiff Central, Roath, Whitchurch, Ely, Barry and Caerphilly are currently at the scene of the blaze in Pearl Street, Adamsdown, after reports a fire at around 12.30pm.

A South Wales Fire Service spokesman said the incident is ongoing and police were also in attendance.
