The Reverend of St Tathan church in the Vale of Glamorgan has spoken of her pride that the local community has pulled together to give a late Welsh Guard a proper send-off.

Harold Morgan, 85, had no known next of kin, and it was feared no one would turn up to his funeral - until a social media appeal changed everything.

I thought I would just put out a quick message on Facebook to see if we could trace some people who used to know him when he lived in the area but the story has just been taken off everywhere. We are now expecting so many people that we might even have to put up speakers outside.

I am really pleased for Harold that his funeral is not now going to be held in an empty church, even though it was sad we had to make an appeal in this way, I am so proud of the response from the community – many of whom are coming to the funeral of a man they may never even have met.

Military students respond to soldier funeral appeal

Thirty teenage students from The Military Preparation College in Cardiff are to attend the funeral of a former Welsh Guardsman tomorrow following a social media appeal for mourners.

St Tathan's church in the Vale of Glamorgan had been unable to trace 85-year-old Harold Morgan's relatives.

As soon as we saw this appeal on Facebook and Twitter, we knew our Cardiff students would want to be there to pay their respects to a former soldier from our community.

This week has all been about remembering those who gave their lives for their country, so we were determined to support the church’s appeal and have the opportunity to give thanks for the life and service of Mr Morgan.

Welsh Guards to attend soldier's funeral after appeal

The Welsh Guards have told ITV News that representatives will be present at the funeral of a former soldier tomorrow after organisers were unable to trace his next of kin.

St Tathan's Church in the Vale of Glamorgan appealed on Facebook for anyone who knew 85-year-old Harold Morgan to come forward.

Other Facebook users, most of whom did not know Mr Morgan, then posted on the thread offering to attend as a mark of respect.

Appeal to trace late soldier's loved ones for funeral

Harold Morgan was a Welsh Guardsman and a railway enthusiast.

A church in the Vale of Glamorgan is appealing for people who knew a former Welsh Guardsman to attend his funeral tomorrow.

Harold Morgan, 85, had asked for his final send-off to take place at St Tathan's Church in St Athan.

But organisers have put an appeal on Facebook after struggling to trace Mr Morgan's next of kin.

On Thursday 13th November, we have the funeral for the late Harold Morgan at 12 noon. He lived in Owain Court before moving to a care home in Barry approximately 14 years ago, and requested that his funeral be at our church.

Unfortunately there's been some difficulty tracing next of kin or knowing who his friends were, or if they're still in St Athan. If you did know Harold, or have any more information, please get in touch or come along to his funeral on Thursday. Thank you.

It has also emerged that Mr Morgan was a railway enthusiast, who was the founding member of the Welsh railways research circle and had written a couple of books on the subject.
