£125k win on Harry for Wales

Harry Wilson's grandfather says he has retired a year early - as of today - after winning £125,000 when Harry made his Wales debut.

Pete Edwards placed a £50 bet, at odds of 2500/1, when Harry was just 18 months old.

He told our reporter Lorna Prichard that even he was surprised at how quickly Harry was picked to play for his country.

The 16-year-old winger came on against Belgium, becoming Wales' youngest ever player.

Harry kept hold of his shirt from last night, rather than swap it with a Belgium player, and took it round to give to his grandparents this morning.

Bookmaker William Hill says Harry Wilson's grandfather was quoted odds of 2500/1, when he visited the Wrexham branch in January 2000, to place a bet on his grandson one day playing for Wales.

His stake was £50, so after Harry came off the bench to make his Wales debut against Belgium last night, granddad Pete Edwards won £125,000.

Harry was just 18 months old when Mr Edwards put the bet on, having seen him kicking a ball around the living room.

Harry was snapped up by Liverpool's academy at the age of eight, and last night became Wales' youngest ever full international, at 16.

"Mr Edwards has been able to quit his job as a result of his amazing ability to spot fledgling talent earlier than almost anyone else we've ever taken a bet from", said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe, who accepted the bet on January 17, 2000.

"Apparently, England have also been interested in Harry, who has a grandmother born in Chester. If Roy Hodgson had snapped him up this bet would have been a loser!"

Harry Wilson's debut for Wales last night has won his grandfather £125,000 - after he placed a bet on the youngster playing for his country one day, when he was just 18 months old.

16-year-old Wilson became Wales' youngest ever player when he came on as a late substitute against Belgium last night.

The Liverpool winger was included in an injury-hit Wales squad for their final two World Cup qualifiers, but didn't make it off the bench against Macedonia on Friday.

62-year-old Peter Edwards from Corwen now has extra reason to be a very proud grandfather.
