Pride of Britain Awards

Welsh stars and community heroes from across Wales have taken part in the glittering Daily Mirror, Pride of Britain Awards in London. Ian Lang has the story of the night.

Rifleman Matthew Wilson, from Aberystwyth, received the Military Special Recognition award at last night's ceremony.

The 21 year old was on duty in Afghanistan in 2011 when a Taliban sniper shot him in the head.

His helmet saved his life and when he regained consciousness he picked himself up and carried on fighting. After one soldier suffered a critical injury, Rifleman Wilson, pushed forward to help his fellow soldier, running across open ground with no cover.

He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery that day and last night received his Pride of Britain Award from Katherine Jenkins.

Wales's Local Hero - as featured on ITV News - attended the Pride of Britain Awards last night.

Phil Jones, from Wrexham, was nominated after helping raise more than £5.5m for charity, while working at Airbus.

He was chosen from among four Welsh finalists to go forward as our representative.

The award went to Anne Scarfe from Plymouth, but Phil says the ceremony was "inspirational" and that he will "carry on doing good things" for others.

A lollipop lady, who dived in front of a car to push a group of children to safety, has been honoured at the Pride of Britain Awards.

Karin Williams, from Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, attended the ceremony last night and said it was "very rewarding" to have won.

Actor James Corden presented her with the award and said it was "one of the finest acts of bravery" he had ever seen.

The lollipop lady who dived in front a car to push a group of children to safety insisted she was not brave and was just acting in instinct to do her job.

Describing the horrifying incident in which a 61-year-old driver lost control of his car, Karin Williams said:

The 15th year of the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards will be marked by a gala ceremony tonight in central London, hosted by Carol Vorderman.

A range of other unsung heroes will be recognised - and David Beckham will be shown presenting the Teenager of Courage Award to Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban after campaigning for girls' education.

The Pride of Britain awards will be screened on ITV at 8pm tomorrow.

A lollipop lady who risked her own life to save children when a car overturned outside their primary school in the Vale of Glamorgan will receive a Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Award tonight.

Karin Williams, 50, was seriously injured after stepping into the path of the car outside Rhoose Primary School in June, pushing pupils to safety.

She endured eight hours of surgery after being left with two broken kneecaps, a broken elbow, a broken shoulder and a badly swollen face.

She will be honoured for her bravery.

The awards recognise Britain's unsung heroes, and are being presented tonight at a ceremony in London.

The Pride of Britain Awards will be screened on ITV at 8pm on Tuesday
