More than 85,000 motorists exceed 20mph speed limit
Mike Griffiths reports
More than 85,000 motorists were last year caught exceeding the 20mph speed limit.
Figures from GoSafe show the majority were in Mid and South Wales. August saw the most offences. The average speed was 28mph.
GoSafe says enforcement in 20mph areas started to be reintroduced at the beginning of November 2023. This was in existing 20mph enforcement locations that weren’t affected by a legislation change and had the correct signage in place.
GoSafe temporarily suspended 20mph enforcement in September 2023 after the law change. It says the decision was made for several reasons. This included allowing people time to adjust to the change, to allow Highways authorities to adjust road signage and Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), and due to roadside engagement sessions being prioritised.
The policy has been controversial since it came into force, with nearly 470,000 signatures on a petition to reverse the lowering of the speed limit. Supporters say it means better safety
Councils have been allowed to make some exemptions to keep certain roads at 30mph.
