Two fatal fires occur in Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil in just 24 hours
Two people have died in separate fires in Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil in just 24 hours.
A 53-year-old woman died at the scene of a fire on Pensalem Road in the Penlan area of Swansea on Thursday (9 January), while another person died in a fire in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil on Wednesday (8 January).
Fire appliances from Merthyr and surrounding areas responded to the incident in Merthyr Tydfil on Wednesday. Area Manager Matt Jones, Head of Operations, said: "This was an extremely challenging incident, and our Firefighters and Joint Fire Control Room staff worked hard to resolve the incident and stop any further spread to other properties.
"I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my condolences to the family, friends, and the surrounding communities."
One person died during the incident.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea Central, Morriston and Port Talbot Fire Stations were called at 5.42am to the fire, at a domestic property, on Pensalem Road in Penlan, Swansea.
A woman died at the scene, while a second casualty escaped from the property through a first-floor and was taken to hospital after being treated by paramedics.
Investigations into the cause of both fires are underway.
