A former pupil reportedly assaulted three teachers after coming onto the school's site, causing pupils to go go into lockdown.

The incident happened at Newport High School on Tuesday (7th January).

A former key stage three pupil came onto the school site and staff began emergency procedures including a lockdown towards the end of the school day, the school said in a statement on social media.

Gwent Police attended the school and said the ex-pupil "reportedly caused damage to school property, cars and assaulted three teachers."

"Two teachers received minor injuries and the third attended hospital as a precaution," they said.

The school said: "Following an incident when a former key stage three pupil came onto the school site, staff instigated its emergency procedures to ensure the safety of pupils.

"This included a lockdown procedure towards the end of the school day. Police attended and supported the school.

"Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on the details on the incident, but it was extremely upsetting for both staff and pupils, particularly those who witnessed the incident.

"We are aware of a rumour that a knife was involved but at this stage we have no evidence that was the case and can confirm that no weapons were used.

"We take school safety very seriously and, have a range of measures in place, but a review is being carried out to see if any further precautions could be taken.

Police enquiries are ongoing.
