A retired footballer got more than he bargained for when he tucked into a Welsh cake only to find a missing wedding ring.

Cliff Jones, who played for Swansea, Tottenham Hotspur and Wales, made the discovery yesterday (November 22) after being gifted the baked goods by a friend.

It turned out the ring belongs to Joyce Medwin - wife of former Spurs player Terry Medwin.

Cliff's wife Joan said: "It was her mother's ring and she wears it everyday so she was devastated when she realised it was missing."

Joyce had baked the Welsh cakes and given them to Cliff and Joan when they met up to watch the Spurs game.

"I thought at first was a current or something, then I realised It's a ring, it's a wedding ring".

Cliff said: "Joyce, every now and again, will make these wonderful Welsh cakes - they're the best."

"She had told us how she lost her beloved wedding ring a few days ago and last night, I was just enjoying the homemade Welsh cakes she made for me when suddenly I bit on something hard.

"I thought at first was a current or something, then I realised It's a ring, it's a wedding ring".

Joan was shocked when she saw Cliff holding the ring.

She said: "Last night, Cliff had a Welsh cake. When he came in and showed me, it was unbelievable.

"Joyce had given us a dozen Welsh cakes and the ring just happened to be inside the first one Cliff ate".

Cliff said Joyce was "overjoyed" and "absolutely over the moon" when they told her the news.
