Man severely injured in Black Mountains paragliding crash

A man has been severely injured in a paragliding crash in the Black Mountains.

Mountain rescuers were called out to the incident on Hay Bluff, near Hay-on-Wye, on Saturday morning.

Initial reports were of a knee injury but crews from Longtown Mountain Rescue discovered the paraglider's injuries were severe.

Due to his location and injuries, a rescue helicopter from the Coastguard was called out from St Athans and the man was airlifted to hospital.

A spokesperson from Longtown Mountain Rescue said: "Quite quickly we had a casualty carer team member on scene with the casualty who assessed that due to the precarious location of the casualty, a rope system was the best way to get him into a position of safety.

"We are thankful for the Coastguard helicopter for flying team members and equipment to the summit of Hay Bluff and the onward transfer to hospital.

"We wish him a full and speedy recovery."
