Wales women have secured their first win in over two years as they kicked off their autumn international campaign against Japan on the weekend.

The team's last win at the Cardiff Arms Park was against Ireland in 2018. It was also the first match the players have played in front of fans since the start of the pandemic.

The two year losing streak came to an end as they beat Japan 23-5. They came into this game on the news that professional contracts have been for the first time.

Wales started off the match on the front foot showing impressive rugby as the game went on.

Captain Siwan Lilicrap was first over the try line, followed by two penalty kicks from Elinor Snowsill to lead at the break 11-0.

In the second half Wales continued their strong performance as Jasmine Joyce proved how deadly she can be, scoring twice and earning the DHL player of the match.

Despite being a player down, Wales continued to put pressure on Japan holding them back for over 75 minutes with their excellent tight defence.

But credit to Japan as they scored a late consolation try just three minutes before the final whistle.

Kat Evans was awarded her first international cap having played for the majority of the match.

Captain Siwan Lilicrap spoke positively of how the game went, she said: "I am pleased with our performance and how the girls played throughout the game, it is a huge step up for us from where we have been before".

"The character we have shown to win that game, in that fashion, I couldn't be proud of the girls today we absolutely needed that.

"It is a massive relief as we can start believing in ourselves again and I am excited to see where we go in this campaign."

It was the perfect evening for Wales women as they end a historic week with a long over due win.

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham is satisfied with the performance and believes there are plenty of positives for next Saturday's match against South Africa.

He said: "I am satisfied to get the win, the girls really worked hard and deserved to get that victory".

"There is still lots to work on and that is always a positive which we can review thoroughly and hope to make improvements before South Africa.
