Performer Jonny Cotsen on being 'a deaf man in a hearing world' and changing attitudes

"I'm a profoundly deaf man, but I describe myself as a deaf man who speaks" explains Jonny Cotsen.

"I never really had access to BSL when I was growing up, although I can understand it. My preference would be to speak."

The Cardiff-born performer and campaigner explores this identity in his one-man show 'Louder Is Not Always Clearer', which he is about to take on a tour of the UK and Europe.

Jonny's show Louder Is Not Always Clearer challenges audiences to examine their prejudices and misconceptions

"The show is about a deaf man trapped in a hearing world" Jonny said.

"The reason why I wanted to perform is I want to show the barriers I encounter on a daily basis."

The show, a collaboration with performers Mr and Mrs Clark, stemmed from an art exhibition Jonny created.

Over the last four years, they've staged the show right across Europe, with the latest run postponed until now due to the pandemic.

The final run, with dates across the UK and in the Netherlands, begins on September 17.

"I really hope it'll make a small difference" says Jonny.

"Even though it's really focused on a hearing audience, a lot of deaf people say this is great, I'm connecting with it."

"I hope that it will make a difference to them as well."
