'We're in the game': Excitement as Wrexham Football Club is added as a playable team on FIFA 22
Wrexham Football Club has been added as a playable team in the globally popular video game franchise FIFA.
It means Wrexham fans will be able to play in their team colours in FIFA 22.
In a typically lighthearted Twitter post owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney confirmed that "the rumours are true" and that Wrexham has been added to the video game.
The football club also issued a good-humoured tweet of its own, saying: "This is a statement from the press office of Wrexham AFC regarding FIFA 22.
"We're in the game.
"Ends."
The news was well-received by Wrexham fans on social media.
One posted: "This excitement of being a Wrexham fan never lets up does it. I can't take it any more."
Another wrote: "Best tweet of the day. Been waiting to play as Wrexham for a VERY long time."
The FIFA video game franchise began in 1993 and is hugely popular amongst gamers, selling millions of copies every year.
EA Sports, the firm behind the FIFA video game, has signed a partnership with Wrexham AFC that both organisations said would extend beyond the virtual world.
David Jackson, from EA Sports, said: "It's great to be partnerning with Wrexham AFC and to support the club's commitments to the Wrexham community and its fans.
"We're excited to launch innovative community projects in collaboration with the Club, and for Wrexham fans to experience playing with their side in EA Sports FIFA 22 when the game releases later this month.
Humphrey Ker, Wrexham's executive director, said everyone at the club was "truly excited" about the news.
"There are only a small number of brands within football that can be classed as iconic and that every club wants to be associated with," he said.
"Everyone is truly excited about Wrexham joining FIFA 22. The co-chairmen talked about making Wrexham a global force when they became its custodians and are now able, with our fans, to take on the Rest of the World, as part of that journey."
