Welsh athletes top podiums as Laura Sugar and Aled Sion Davies claim golds in Tokyo for ParaGB
Welsh athletes have added two more golds to ParaGB's collection as both Laura Sugar and Aled Sion Davies secure wins in Saturday's action.
For Sugar, it was her first ever Paralympic medal. The 30-year-old competed in athletics at the Rio Paralympic Games and only took-up para canoeing in 2018.
The change in event paid off for Sugar, who finished in 49.582 seconds, setting herself a new personal best.
No stranger to the podium, Aled Sion Davies retained his title in the shot put, bringing his gold Paralympic tally to three.
Before her Paralympic debut in 2016, Sugar played hockey for Wales but inspired by the London 2012 games, she decided to turn to athletics. She represented Great Britain in the long-jump, the T44 200m and T44 100m in Rio - finishing fifth in the latter two.
However on Saturday in Tokyo, only the top spot would do for Sugar as she dominated the KL3 para canoe sprint.
France's Nelia Barbosa came in second, finishing almost two seconds behind Sugar.
Appearing later on Saturday, Aled Sion Davies secured his gold medal in the F63 shot put. A throw of 15.33m was not his best but still almost half a metre in front of silver place.
Alongside gold in Tokyo and Rio, Davies topped the podium in discuss at London 2012.
ParaGB are still in second place in the medal table overall, behind China.
