Coronavirus deaths in Wales lowest since March, ONS data shows

The number of deaths from coronavirus in Wales have fallen to their lowest since March, new data shows.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics also reveal deaths in England and Wales have fallen by more than a quarter within seven days and remain at the lowest level since before the lockdown, official statistics show.

The ONS said England and Wales are experiencing fewer deaths than would normally be expected for the sixth week in a row.

In Wales, there were seven deaths involving coronavirus - one death below the five-year average registered in the week ending July 24.

In total, there have been 21,981 deaths in Wales so far this year - 10.2% higher than the five-year average. 11% of those deaths mentioned Covid-19.

In Wales, the number of deaths was 2,503 - higher than the number recorded by Public Health Wales as the ONS records deaths in all places.

The figures also show between 17 March and 24 July 2020, there were 501 deaths ofresidents in care homes involving coronavirus.
