Transport for Wales have asked people to only use public transport for essential travel ahead of pubs reopening across the border in England this weekend.

They anticipate that this, along with changes to the rules on travel in Wales on Monday 6, may mean more journeys being taken.

People are being urged to seek other options instead of public transport if their journey is essential. This is so buses and trains can be prioritised for key workers.

In a statement, the train operator said: "This Saturday will see some pubs reopen in England. In addition from Monday in Wales the rules will change to allow people from two separate households to form one exclusive, extended household. Monday will also see the end of the five-mile 'Stay Local' guidance.

"It is anticipated these changes might encourage more journeys, so TfW are reinforcing the message that public transport should be used for essential travel only. This is to ensure there is enough space for key workers and those with no alternative option to continue to travel safely."

In Friday's Welsh Government briefing, the First Minister echoed this warning and urged people not to break lockdown rules by travelling outside their local area to England to visit a pub on Saturday.

Extra safety measures have been introduced on trains and at stations like one-way systems and additional cleaning to help people travel safely during the pandemic.

Transport for Wales are also encouraging people to follow government advice on face coverings.

This means if you are travelling to England on a train from Wales, it is advised to wear a facemask for the Welsh leg of your journey as it may be difficult to social distance on a train. You must wear a face mask on the train when in England.

People are advised to check timetables in advance as they are subject to change based on how many people are travelling.

Transport for Wales are also trialing an online 'capacity checker' that allows travellers to see how busy trains are.
