Investigation underway after newly-installed Cardiff trees damaged
An investigation is underway after a number of newly-installed trees near Cardiff city centre were left damaged in an apparent act of vandalism.
The trees were placed along Wellfield Road in Roath after its roadside parking was removed and pavements extended to help aid social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Some had supported the changes, while others expressed concerns over access to the local businesses in the area.
Oliver Copleston, who lives locally and took the photographs, wrote on Twitter: "I know some people aren't happy with these changes but this is not okay."
Cardiff Council's leader called it a "distressing and depressing start to the week".
Huw Thomas said: "Although only temporary on Wellfield Road, we planned re-plant these trees in areas of low canopy cover in Cardiff. So sad. And this comes on top of the tons of litter left at Roald Dahl Plass on Friday. What is wrong with some people?"
Cardiff Council confirmed that four trees in total were damaged.
A spokesperson said: “It’s really disappointing to see these new trees, which were brought in to enhance the district, damaged in this way. The affected trees were removed by council officers this morning and four new trees will now be re-ordered. We will continue to assist the police with their ongoing enquiries.”
South Wales Police said: "We're investigating criminal damage to trees on Wellfield Road, Cardiff, which was reported at 11.40pm last night. Enquiries are continuing.
