Anyone who has come into contact with workers who have tested positive for coronavirus at a Merthyr Tydfil food factory have been told to self-isolate.

People have been told to self-isolate to reduce the risk to the wider community.

More than 100 cases of the virus have been confirmed at the Kepak food factory after hundreds of workers at the site were tested.

Public Health Wales says there are currently 'no plans to take any wider public health action' such as school or workplace closures and that 'no outbreak has been declared.'

More than 800 workers from the site were tested on Saturday 27 June, with 101 cases testing positive for coronavirus.

This brings the total number of cases at Kepak to 130 since April earlier this year.

Heather Lewis, Consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, said: “As we move into the recovery phase of the Coronavirus pandemic, we expect to see clusters in settings such as workplaces.

“We have identified 101 confirmed cases of Coronavirus at the facility following proactive, rapid testing of the workforce, and any contacts have been instructed to self-isolate to prevent spread to the wider community.

“The identification of these cases is evidence that the Test, Trace, Protect strategy is being effective, and we are confident that all appropriate action is being taken to control this cluster.

“There are no plans to take any public health action in the wider community, such as through school or workplace closures, and no outbreak has been declared."
