Wales still has equivalent of three large hospitals filled with coronavirus patients, NHS Wales boss says
While the number coronavirus cases continues to fall there are still the equivalent of three large hospitals full of coronavirus patients in Wales, the chief executive of NHS Wales has said.
Speaking at the Welsh Government's daily press conference, Dr Andrew Goodall said there are currently 885 Covid-19 patients in hospital beds.
He said: ''This is lower than last week and has reduced over the last two weeks.''
''Whilst lower, this still means the equivalent of hospitals full of covid related patients.''
Following the introduction of ''support bubbles'' in England, allowing people living alone to stay with one other household, Dr Goodall said calls for the same thing will be reviewed by the Welsh Government.
''We'll be approaching the next phase of the lockdown review through next week,'' he said.
''The first minister and the cabinet will review any opportunities to see what the next steps are for lockdown restrictions.
''There'll be an outcome next week as part of the normal three week review process.''
Dr Goodall also said a wider range of dental treatments will be available in Wales from July.
He said: ''The restoration of dental services needs to be gradual to protect staff and patients.
''The group of people who've experienced problems during lockdown will be offered assessment and care first.''
The final phase will see the return of routine check ups.
