Latest coronavirus figures show two month battle against pandemic

The latest figures for coronavirus deaths from the Office for National Statistics show that the pandemic has now taken 2,240 lives in Wales. The number is for all deaths in all locations where Covid-19 was given as a cause on the death certificate.

It is significantly higher than the 1,401 announced by Public Health Wales, which is based on deaths, mostly in hospital, of patients who have tested positive for the disease.

The latest ONS figures show that coronavirus was a cause of 105 deaths in Wales in the week ending 29 May, down from 134 the week before. They give the following breakdown by location:

  • Hospitals 60 (down from 82 the week before)

  • Care Homes 35 (down from 44 the week before)

  • Elsewhere 10 people (up from 8 the week before)

The week-by-week figures from the ONS show the rapid spread and much slower decline of coronavirus in Wales. The death toll leapt from 21 to 132 between 27 March and 3 April and more than doubled again a week later. It was at its peak in mid and late April when over 400 deaths were recorded for two weeks in a row.
