More than 2,000 lives lost in Wales to coronavirus, death certificates reveal

The latest figures for Wales from the Office for National Statistics show that deaths each week from coronavirus continue to fall but have now taken more than 2,000 lives.

The ONS figures include all deaths, in all places, where Covid-19 was given as a cause on the death certificate. The total now stands at 2,007, considerably more than the 1,274 announced by Public Health Wales, based on patients who died after testing positive for the disease.

The total for the week ending 15 May was 180 which is a decline from 211 the week before.

The figure fell for deaths in hospitals, care homes and elsewhere.

There has been an 11% drop in care home deaths, compared to a 15% fall in hospitals which could suggest the battle to eradicate the virus is proving hardest in care home settings.

  • Hospitals - 105 (down from 124)

  • Care Homes - 67 (down from 76)

  • Elsewhere - 8 (down from 11)
