Recycling centres in Wales set to reopen from next week

Recycling centres across Wales are set to reopen after closing as part of lockdown restrictions.

The centres were shut in order to maintain key services, such as household bin collection, during lockdown.

But from next week the centres will begin to reopen, with the majority of councils deciding to open from May 26.

Councils have agreed to implement strict health and safety requirements which will include ensuring social distancing and managing traffic to sites.

The Welsh Government hope the centres will help curb a reported rise in fly-tipping since lockdown restrictions came into force.

But they reminded people only to use services if it is essential.

Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hannah Blythyn, said recycling services are critical in Wales but reminded people to avoid visiting if showing symptoms of COVID-19.

“Wales has a strong recycling record and we have been working with Local Authorities in Wales to reopen Recycling Centres in a safe way.'' she said.

''Waste and recycling services are critical public services and we have developed clear guidance with Local Authorities on how they can reopen safely to ensure the wellbeing of staff and the public.

''However, anyone with COVID-19 symptoms or anyone living in a household with someone displaying symptoms of the virus or who are shielding should avoid visiting their local recycling centre.''
