Three-day-old baby dies in hospital after mother contracts coronavirus

A three-day-old baby died in hospital after his mother contracted coronavirus, an inquest has heard.

Coolio Carl Justin Morgan's mother tested positive for Covid-19 before she gave birth.

Coolio was born in the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, South Wales, with a low heart rate.

In a statement, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said, “While we are unable to discuss personal information relating to our patients, losing a baby is absolutely heart-breaking for any family. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them and we offer them our support and condolences at this incredibly difficult and distressing time.”

The baby was born at Princess of Wales Hospital

The inquest heard he was transferred to Singleton hospital in Swansea but died later.

Coroner Graeme Hughes heard Coolio, whose family live in nearby Maesteg, died on May 5 when he was three days old.

The inquest was opened in Pontypridd but was adjourned to await full results of a post mortem examination into the cause of his death.

A full hearing will be held later this year.
