'Expect significant increase' in testing particularly in care home sector, says health minister

Vaughan Gething said Wales can expect to see a ''significant" rise in uptake and capacity of coronavirus tests, especially in the care home sector.

In the daily press briefing on Tuesday, he said testing capacity has reached more than 5,000 this week, with two new testing centres having opened in Swansea and Abercynon.

The rise in testing comes following 'minor' changes in lockdown restrictions in Wales. The lockdown, and 'stay at home' message remains, but garden centres re-opened following the announcement made by the First Minister over the weekend.

However, in England, Boris Johnson said people could now go outdoors'' as many times each day as they wish'', as well as travel to different destinations, and encouraged those who could go back to work, to return to work.

Vaughan Gething said the change in tone from the UK Government was not '''helpful'' and would have preferred a discussion between all four nations to avoid ''confusion''.

On Tuesday, hotels and hostels in Wales said they were 'inundated' with booking requests, following easing of lockdown rules in England.

Wales’ three National Park Authorities also called on all UK residents to respect rules and measures in place in Wales.

However, Vaughan Gething echoed the First Minister in that closing borders would not be a ''real option''. Instead he said the policing and enforcing of laws was key.

Ending furlough scheme could do 'real harm'

The Welsh Government said it has made "direct representations to Chancellor for the furlough scheme not to end at this point in time".

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the coronavirus job retention scheme has been extended to the end of October, but employers will share the burden with the government from August.

The health minister said a premature end to the scheme could do "real harm".
