The number of deaths from coronavirus in deprived areas of Wales is almost double than that of affluent areas, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

The most deprived parts of the country had 44.6 deaths per 100,000 people between March 1 and April 17 compared to 23.2 in the least deprived areas.

When looking at men living in the most deprived areas the death rate increases even further to 61.9 deaths per 100,000 people. The figure for women in the same areas is 32.0.

The figures in Wales follow a similar pattern than in England, where the number of deaths more than double in deprived areas.

On Tuesday, figures released by the ONS showed a third of all deaths in care homes were due to Covid-19.
