Gareth Bale donates £500,000 to his local Cardiff health board
Wales and Real Madrid star, Gareth Bale, has donated half a million pounds to his local health board to help with the response to coronavirus.
The Cardiff and Vale Health Charity is the official charity of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. It focuses on providing extras for staff and patients that 'normal' funding doesn't provide.
The health board thanked the footballer for his 'huge' donation to the University Hospital of Wales.
Len Richards, Chief Executive at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said the donation was ''heartening'' and a testament to the hard work of NHS staff.
He added it was Gareth and his wife Emma’s wishes that the money is spent towards the response to COVID.
The Real Madrid star was born in the University Hospital of Wales Maternity Unit, and they say UHW have provided many services to themselves and their family and friends.
Last month, another of Wales' football stars, Aaron Ramsey, donated £10,000 to support staff in the NHS.
The Juventus midfielder made the donation to a fundraising page set up by Cardiff and Vale Health Charity to ensure staff have suitable equipment and resources to tackle the coronavirus epidemic.
